Russian Art Prior to the 20th Century

Art is a reflection of the society that creates it, and at no time in the history of art has there been a better example of this than in Soviet Russia. Up until the first two decades of the 20th century, most of Russia's art was found in the private collections of wealthy citizens. But after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, its leader, Vladimir Lenin, decided to give art "to the people." All private collections were confiscated and put on display in museums.
